Techno File

This blog contains the technology-related musings of the Flesk I.T. owner Bill Garrett.

Bill has had over 25 years in the I.T. industry and has held about every job there is in the field from Analyst / Programmer to I.T. Technical Manager, from Systems Administrator to Chief Solutions Architect. About the only job he has yet to do is write about I.T. but this is being rectified with this blog and weekly column "Techno File" that appears in the Killarney Outlook. Feel free to comment on the blog entries.

Cloud-based services are often touted as a revolution and a panacea but in reality it is neither. Even Internet-based services have been around for a long time, indeed the largest Internet-based services is the World Wide Web which is essentially a dispersed online publishing service.

Back in the days of yester-year when I.T. was in its infancy a term to describe a problem with a computer was named a bug. This is because a computer, or at least one computer called Colossus, was made from Valves and these glass cylinders ran so hot that an insect alighting on one could cause it to shatter and thus halt processing. The boffins from Bletchley Park thus coined the term “bug” to describe a problem with the computer operations.

Dastardly deeds are a-foot. A cabal of scientists at Bristol University headed by a machiavellian character called Peter Rogers is attempting to gain more than their share of coffee by launching a propaganda campaign to the effect that coffee does not bring any tangible cognitive benefits to the users but merely suppresses withdrawal symptoms. However, we are on to them. We can reveal that this is all a plot designed to wean others from the elixir of life so that they can keep it all to themselves thus giving them an undeniable edge in their quest for world domination!
